| Wildcats' football camp brings new season closer |
|
By Tim Petrowich Sat Aug 02, 2008, 02:14 AM CDT Marion Daily Republican It's not practice. Marion High School football coach Kerry Martin will quickly tell you so. However, the football camp at Marion High School this week was certainly designed to keep the Wildcat football program on pace with its neighbors as well as its immediate past. "I think every coach I talk to, they would love to give their kids more time off in the summer," Martin said. "But it's become a necessary evil, because everybody's using their 25 days and it's a mad dash to get to a certain level of play. If you don't take advantage of it, you will fall behind." This week, between 115 and 120 would-be Wildcat football players have braved temperatures in the 90s and heat indices in the low 100s to get a head start on the 2008 season. "It's a chance for us to put the pads on and see where we're at," Martin said. "To evaluate players, to evaluate abilities, to see how they handle pressure, to see how they handle some adversity, to see what kind of team chemistry we have, and I think finding out what our strengths and weaknesses are. If you wait until Aug. 13, the first day of two-a-days, it's too late. "Two-a-days becomes Game 1 prep almost immediately. So this gives us a chance to really focus on some fundamentals and a lot of basics and really find out where we're at as a program and as a team." Martin and his coaching staff have spent the last week working on fundamentals as well as plays, on offense, defense and special teams. "Our goal is to try to leave this camp so-called game ready," Martin said. "We could go play a game if we had to. Maybe not play great, but leave here with enough offense and defense and special teams in that we could play a game if we had to." During the past two seasons, the Wildcats have won 10 games each year. Marion was 10-2 and reached the IHSA Class 5A quarterfinal in 2006. A 10-3 record put the Wildcats in the Class 5A semifinal last season against eventual state champion Metamora. Martin said the 2008 players know what kind of work it takes to get to that level. "There's no doubt that they have bought in and they've seen what happens when you buy in," Martin said. "We were real blessed by the 2005 season where a group really bought in and they really set a precedent I think for the future classes. We remind the kids every day that as fast as you've won 10 games, you can lose seven just as easily." And this current group of players also knows that summer camp is an important part of making that success continue in the new season. "We've got to start with a clean slate and do the things that helped us be successful the last few years and do them well," Martin said. "What we've done the last few years doesn't put any points on that board Aug. 29. It doesn't. That scoreboard's going to say 0-0. We have to earn any success we have in 2008." Marion opens its season Friday, Aug. 29, at home against Granite City. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. |
